What is physical therapy?
Physical therapy incorporates different treatment techniques, depending on the diagnosis and presentation of symptoms to facilitate a return to a normal function. Utilizing a comprehensive approach, the physical therapist evaluates a patient to determine the limitations in dynamic movement, muscular strength, range of motion at specific joints, and control of the neuromuscular system. Although medical diagnoses are often similar between individuals, physical therapy diagnoses vary based on the presentation of symptoms and goals of each patient. Our goal is to educate patients to help themselves, therefore we provide patients with exercises to do outside of physical therapy to speed up recovery and decrease further injury.
Who is a physical therapist?
In order to practice, a physical therapist is required to pass a state licensure exam after graduating from an accredited physical therapy educational program. The accredited programs offer either a master's degree (MPT or MSPT) or a professional doctorate (DPT) and accept students after undergraduate coursework is completed. The length of a physical therapy program varies between two and one-half and three years. Physical therapists specialize in the musculoskeletal system and use their skills to evaluate and improve movement of the body through exercise, manual therapy, and other methods.
Do I need a prescription from a doctor to come to physical therapy?
In March 2007, Washington DC passed direct access legislation that eliminates the physician referral requirement for patients needing physical therapist services. This law will allow patients to direct access the services of a licensed physical therapist for evaluation and treatment without restrictions or a physician’s referral. New York passed the same act in July of 2007. SET Sports Physical Therapy recommends that you consult with a physician regarding your condition and obtain a written prescription for physical therapy services. It is the patient’s responsibility to keep prescriptions up to date and the written prescription may assist in insurance reimbursement process.
How do I verify if my insurance will cover for physical therapy services?
You can call our office and leave the following information: your full name and phone number, the name and phone number of your insurance company, your member or subscriber ID# (this is different than the group number) and your date of birth. We will contact your insurance company directly to verify your benefits and then call you back to review the benefits and if you choose, schedule an appointment.
What should I bring to my first appointment?
For your first appointment you will need to bring your insurance card, prescription from your doctor, and credit card. To save time on your first visit, download and fill out the new patient forms at www.set-sports.com and bring them with you to your appointment. Forms will also be available at the facility. Also, bring athletic clothing so the physical therapist can conduct an evaluation of the injured area. SET Sports Physical Therapy in DC is located in a fitness facility where lockers, showers, and dressing areas are available for your use and locks are supplied for the lockers. In NY, a private and secure dressing area is available for all clients.
What should I expect during my physical therapy appointments?
On your first visit, the physical therapist will take a history related to your symptoms and mechanism of injury and perform an examination involving tests and measures to determine deficits due to your injury. The physical therapist will use manual therapy techniques to resolve tight structures followed by a strength and conditioning program to stabilize your biomechanical problems, factoring in your goals. All appointments are scheduled one-on-one with a physical therapist for up to one hour. In order to preserve continuity of care, the client schedules with the same physical therapist for every session.
